Born and raised in Kabul, 21-year-old Manizha Talash dared to dream in a world that often stifled women’s aspirations. When a chance encounter with a breakdancing video on social media in 2020 ignited a passion within her and changed her life forever, unlocking new possibilities and dreams and setting her on a path that would lead her from the war-torn streets of her homeland to the global stage of the Olympic Games.

A Breakdancer's Rise, Defying the Odds in Kabul

Talash’s journey took a lot of work. Growing up in a country where women were often confined to domestic roles and their rights severely minimized, she found comfort and inspiration in the unlikely world of breakdancing. The gym became her sanctuary, where she met and trained with the breakdancers, Superior Crew, hoping to learn under the mentorship of her idol, Jawad Sezdah, while honing her skills, mastering power moves, and immersing herself in the vibrant culture of hip-hop.

“You can do it. It is not impossible. It is difficult, but it is not impossible,” her crew always told Talash while pushing her determination to pursue dancing.

Despite facing societal pressures and even threats, she persisted in her pursuit, becoming the first “B-girl*” in Afghanistan.

A Fight for Survival While Keeping Her Dreams Alive

However, the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, causing the Taliban’s takeover, made Talash face insurmountable challenges. Multiple attacks on the breakdancing gym, increasing threats to her safety, forcing her to make the heart-wrenching decision to flee her homeland. Leaving behind her family and dreams, she sought refuge in Pakistan before eventually finding safety in Spain.

Despite the turmoil and uncertainty, her love for breakdancing remained unwavering, highlighting the immense courage it took to prioritize her dreams while protecting her loved ones.
